Here's a timely example of The Fox Effect. It's about 30 seconds into a Glenn Beck segment:
"It's no longer dis... un... uh... respectable to be antisemitic on The Left."
Triple play! Some nobody on Fox immediately found a way to connect today's Nazi-inspired terrorism at the Holocaust Museum to the Palestinian people and American liberals while obscuring the fact that the suspect in custody for the shooting is an extreme right-winger with a history and a following. You know, just like Glenn Beck.
Yes, let's call it The Fox Effect. Even Shepard Smith knows it.
Update: as Martha Gellhorn's Ghost implies in the comments, The Fox Effect, like Mephistophiles, is known by many names. And it looks like she came up with a valid alternate coinage.

Control the language and you control the "ground" of the battle -- in effect you choose when and "WHERE" to fight. Worth some serious creative effort, followed by a coordinated and relentless push.
ReplyDelete"O.b. effect", right, like the law of free will has been repealed. As many like to point out (when it suits them) Actions Have Consequences. Let's see, vs Fox Effect, how about "Ditto-Bot Icide"? Point out and/or tar the idea of being coerced and lay the blame squarely. Yes, propaganda, but tit for tat.

MGG: I don't see your style of response as propaganda, exactly, but tit for tat, yes. That's the most direct way to control a bully. I think that when the dust blows away, the victim of the bully takes many fewer ("many fewer" --- haha!) lumps than he would have without deploying the tats. Of course we're not dealing not with schoolyard bullies. We're dealing with ideologues whose mission is to shit in the toddler's bathwater hoping to see it beaten to death for crapping in the tub. Exposing the tactics to the public, through mimicry, may help render them useless. Did you notice how quickly the wingnut media learned how to say "Obama" without first stammering around with the "Osama" shit?
