Paging North Carolina

*
I hope the onslaught of storms over the weekend spared The 59er and his acquaintances. Can't remember exactly where you are located in the Carolinas, Sam. Please post something here when you get a chance so I (we) know you and your town are OK.

  1. Hey-- I watched the whole tornado thing unfold on the local weather and more importantly their Doppler 5000 radar, and watching the path of the storm I knew we were going to be OK on the NW side of town. All we got was a little rain and sunshine while the other side of town and other area's on NC were being destroyed.

What was left for the folks that got hit was anything from minor cleanup to bulldozed and rebuild.

Last tornado I saw this bad was Thanksgiving of 1988. One went over my home in Durham at 1am and touched down 5 miles away wiping out a Kmart and several neighborhoods not far from my current address. When you here that Freight Train coming....you better be sure.

Other than this, Hurricane Fran in 1996 and a 1" ice storm in 2003 were damn near as bad. One hurricane and a Christmas Eve ice storm with no power and you learn pretty quick it's not a bad idea to have a few emergency survival items stored away in the garage, and a safe/vault for locking away the most important personal items in case you need to dig them up later. My daughter said I need to buy us a safe house. The thought has crossed my mind.

We've been extremely lucky and blessed over the years.

    Thanks for thinking of us.

  3. 59er: glad you and yours are safe. But some more went through on Thursday or Friday, right? You live in a location with numerous opportunities for weather calamities. Here, the tornadoes seem to follow fairly predictable routes, maybe related to topography. No guarantees, though. Unfortunately there has been a lot of townhouse and condo development in those corridors over the past decade.
