Wikipedia tells me that this insane little bundle of gnat notes began life pretty much as a small throwaway interlude at the end of "Act III, Tableau 1" (whatever the hell that's supposed to mean). He sure gets a lot of tones out of that axe around his neck---horns, percussion... in fact, everything except guitar.
